With just a bit over 10 months to go until the 2008 US Presidential Elections how are things shaping up?
On the Democratic side it looks like Mrs. Clinton is holding quite steady and even gaining a bit over Barack Obama. Recent polls have shown Hillary Clinton to be favored with antwhere from 40-45% of voters saying they would vote for her in the Democratic primaries if they were held now. In contrast, Barack Obama has just 20-25% of voters choosing him as their candidate in the primaries. Over the past 4 months there has been little change in these numbers and at this point it seems almost a given that Hillary Clinton will be the 2008 democratic presidential candidate with Barack Obama as her vice-president.
And what about the Republicans? Things are not nearly so clear on the right wing. Rudy Guiliani has been the clear front runner and currently anywhere from 20-30% of the people polled would vote for him if the Republican primary were held now. Guiliani has been holding steady with those numbers since the summer. What isn’t as clear is the contenders.
Four months ago John McCain and Fred Thompson were in 2nd and third place with both seeing percentages of supporters in the high teens. Both have now dropped to the low teens/high single digits in polls. Replacing them in the second and 3rd positions are Mitt Romney, whose numbers have jumped about 5% from four months ago to 12-17% and Mike Huckabee who has gained amazing support in the past 4 months. Mr. Huckabees polling results have gone from 2-7% in July to 16-22% in the December polls - a whopping 15% jump which puts him a solid second place if not potentially THE candidate.
